AI Is a Powerful Tool—Don’t you think?

I don’t know about you, but when I first saw AI in action, it was like magic.  I couldn’t believe how amazing and powerful it was.  Now it seems like every day I turn to AI more and more for everything from drafting email responses to creating proposals to yes, even drafting articles like this.  Artificial intelligence has officially moved from buzzword to business essential. Whether you are drafting marketing emails, building website copy, or brainstorming new service offerings, tools like ChatGPT have made it easier than ever to move faster and do more with less. For small business owners, this efficiency is a total game changer. And, have you ever wondered if AI is making us less smart?  I have! The research is beginning to come in on this question, and it’s a cautionary tale.  The headline is that research so far seems to indicate that AI can dull our abilities, but that doesn’t mean we have to stop using in.  On the contrary, we should use it often, but in a very particular way…

At 212 Creative, we see firsthand how AI can accelerate workflows and reduce bottlenecks. It helps you get unstuck, generate fresh ideas, and handle tasks that once took hours in just a few minutes. However, a recent study, “Your Brain on ChatGPT: Accumulation of Cognitive Debt when Using an AI Assistant for Essay Writing Task (2025, Kosmyna) highlights a critical concern regarding how we use these tools. If you are relying heavily on AI for writing and thinking, you may be accumulating “cognitive debt” that could impact your long-term problem-solving abilities.

The Hidden Cost: Cognitive Debt

The term cognitive debt refers to the gradual accumulation of mental shortcuts and reliance on external aids that limit an individual’s ability to engage in deep, independent thought. In the study, researchers found that participants who used AI to generate content consistently demonstrated poorer performance across neural, linguistic, and behavioral dimensions compared to those who wrote without assistance.

Essentially, when we offload too much of the writing process to AI, we don’t just gain speed—we risk losing our mental fluency. Participants in the “LLM-to-Brain” group, who were forced to write without AI after previously relying on it, struggled to structure arguments or communicate clearly. It is as if the “mental muscles” required for critical analysis had atrophied from disuse.

Why This Matters for Your Business

As a business owner, your ability to think clearly, communicate effectively, and make strategic decisions is your greatest competitive edge. When you outsource your writing entirely, you risk losing the unique voice that sets your brand apart.

Research suggests that high AI reliance can lead to increased feelings of dependence and a decline in critical engagement. If your marketing content is generated with minimal personal input, you may also miss opportunities to synthesize your own unique business insights, which is precisely what builds trust with your clients.

Enhancing Your Intelligence

AI isn’t the problem—misusing it is. To avoid cognitive debt, use AI to enhance your intelligence, not replace it. Follow these strategies to keep your thinking sharp:

  • Use AI to start, not finish: Treat AI output as a rough draft or a brainstorming partner, not a final product.
  • Engage your own thinking first: Before prompting AI, outline your core ideas independently. This ensures your perspective leads the process. It is helpful for me to get an outline or structure for an article I’m writing, but then I have to make it my. own.
  • Edit actively and thoughtfully: Challenge the AI’s suggestions, inject your real-world experience, and rewrite sections to reflect your authentic voice. Put in details that are uniquely yours, uniquely human. How does it impact you? How have you struggle with this challenge. Make it real.
  • Treat AI as a thinking partner: Ask questions like, “What angles am I missing?” or “Can you challenge my assumptions?” rather than simply asking it to “write” for you. You can also use it to create analogies to help you communicate through your writing. I asked AI to come up with some analogies for AI being a great tool, but we have to use it with caution. Here’s what it came up with:
    • AI is like a chainsaw.
Incredibly efficient and can save you tons of time compared to a handsaw—but if you’re careless or don’t understand how it works, you can do real damage fast.
    • AI is like Google Maps on autopilot.
It can get you somewhere faster and suggest routes you wouldn’t think of—but if you blindly follow it, you might end up driving into a lake.
  • I kind of like those analogies!

By treating AI as a tool for support rather than a crutch, you can continue to exercise your critical thinking muscles while benefiting from the efficiency these tools offer. Your business needs your unique creativity and judgment—never outsource the parts of your business that require your human expertise.
